Cool, discreet environmental magazine

This past weekend, I was catching up on some reading and came across an interesting story about St. Matthew Island in Alaska. I was originally reading another article published in the digital version of Smithsonian Magazine where I found a pointer to the St. Matthew Island story. I clicked on the link to the article and discovered it was published in an obscure little resource called Hakai Magazine.

So what made the Island article stick out? First of all, I love islands. I had never heard of St. Matthew, so I decided to give it a read. Second of all, I thought the writing was fantastic. I don’t know how long it took me to read it, but I know I finished it way quicker than I wished I had. I wanted to read more. Written in the first person, the article is not only informative about the island environment but it also connects you to the author. Oh, the title of the article itself is “The Island That Humans Can’t Conquer.”

Anyway, if you’ve never heard of the magazine, I encourage you to give it a read. Published in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, it “…explores science, society, and the environment from a coastal perspective.” It contains some really, really good articles that cover science and the marine environment.
